Kandinsky and Music!

First graders are in love with abstract art!

My 1st graders just got finished studying the artist Wassily Kandinsky. He was an abstract artist who created art during the 20th century. Kandinsky was also a musician and had great appreciation for music. He related music to abstract art because just like music, abstract art is an interpretation of reality, not a direct representation. My first graders got a kick out of making their oil pastel drawings while listening to a variety of different musical styles. They then painted over their pictures with water color and oohed and ahhed over the wax resist effects.
