Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel

1st graders had so much fun in this one day lesson where they learned about Michelangelo and his painting of the Sistine Chapel. First I showed the students many images of the Sistine chapel while talking about when it was painted, where it is, the general subject matter, etc. Then I described how Michelangelo painted the frescos, often while laying on his back, up on scaffolding. The students were then given coloring sheets that depict the hands of God and Adam about to touch (you know the image...) and they had to tape them to the bottom of their tables and lay on their backs to color them in! Afterwards, they cut out the image, glued them to a piece of construction paper and wrote some pertinent information around the image. Great hands on lesson that teaches on many levels!
